    Motorway tolls in Latvia for 2024

    Driving on Latvian roads and motorways is free for drivers of motorcycles, passenger cars and other vehicles gross weight of up to 3000 kg.

    The use of sections of the main national and regional roads for vehicles with a total weight exceeding 3000 kilograms and vehicles or combinations of vehicles with a total weight exceeding 3500 kilograms is subject to toll.

  2. Tolls payment in Latvia 2024

    Motorway vignettes for vehicles over 3.0 t can be bought online at the official website LvVignette.eu. The vignette is purchased online without registration and there are no additional fees. Payment can be made using VISA, MasterCard, VISA Electron, Maestro or American Express.

    The vignettes can also be purchased at selected petrol stations or other locations. You will find all sales points on this map. A handling fee is added to the price of the vignette at the point of sale, which may vary from dealer to dealer.

    Sections charged with a special toll

    Passenger cars must pay an entrance fee for entering the administrative territory of Jūrmala through the bridge.

    The fee is €3,00 for motorcycles and cars weighing up to 3.5 t and applies from April 1 to September 30. The entrance fee must be paid at the ticket machine in front of the bridge, and credit cards or coins are accepted. The fee can also be paid online at Epakalpojumi.jurmala.lv. If you are planning a longer stay, it is better to pay a time-limited fare, which gives you an unlimited number of entries. Electric cars should not pay the entrance fee.

  4. Motorways in Latvia: Speed limits, fines

    Speed limits in Latvia

    Fines for motorway tolls

    If vehicle weighing more than 3 t do not have the correct amount of toll paid, the driver can be fined from €60 to €120, while the carrier can be fined from €300 to €500. If the vehicle has no vignette at all, the driver can be fined from €180 to €360 and the carrier from €500 to €1 000.

    If you miss the toll machine at the entrance to Jūrmala, you will be fined with a penalty of €50. Right after the bridge, you will be stopped by patrolling police officers.

  5. Driving fines in Latvia for 2024

    In Latvia, there is a point system whereby drivers are given penalty points for traffic offences. The maximum number of points is 10 for drivers with less than two years’ driving experience and 16 for other drivers. A maximum of 8 points can be obtained for one offence. If the maximum number of penalty points is reached, the driver is banned from driving for 1 year.

    The amount of fines for traffic offences in Latvia is determined using so-called fine units. One unit of the fines is 5 EUR.

    Latvia has relatively low fines by European standards, but thanks to European funding, many speed cameras and other devices have been built in recent years. Especially around the big cities, you can see speed cameras and lots of police patrols.

    Drivers and passengers of motorcycles, mopeds and ATVs are required to wear a protective helmet.

    Tires

    Winter tires are mandatory in Latvia from 2020. The obligation applies from December 1 to March 1 and the minimum tread depth must be 4 mm.

    Seat belts

    The use of seat belts is mandatory for all occupants of the vehicle.

    Kids in the car

    Children under 150 cm and 12 years of age must be seated in a child car seat appropriate to the child’s height and weight or in a booster seat with a seat belt fastened.

    Drinking and driving

    The maximum blood alcohol limit in Latvia is 0.5 per mille. For novice drivers with less than 2 years of experience and professional drivers, a limit of 0.2 per mille applies. The penalties for drunk driving are as follows:

    • 0,2 – 0,5‰ – from €210 to €430
    • 0,5 – 1,0‰ – from €430 to €640 and revocation of driving licence for 1 year
    • 1,0 – 1,5‰ – from €850 to €1 000 and revocation of driving licence for 3 years
    • more than 1,5‰ – from €1 200 to €2 000 and revocation of driving licence for 5 years

    Daytime lightning is mandatory all year round.
